2012-Highlights and Lowlights
On New Year’s Day 2013 we asked each other what
our highlights of 2012 were. Surprisingly we came up with slightly different
lists. Here is mine:
Purchasing our first flat in Grenoble
Parapente/ Paragliding off a cliff with my son
Sanary sur mer
Watching the Olympics-felt proud to be British
Our first French wedding
Weekend in Turin
New Year’s Eve in Strawberry Moons in
London-dancing the night away
Lowlight-Hearing about the gang rape of a young
Indian woman. Such a despicable and sickening act of violence! When will the
world change its attitude towards women? One placard held by a protester rang
true for me “Don’t tell your daughters what to wear. Tell your sons not to
rape”. The one ray of optimism is although crimes like this have been happening
for decades, the men and women are on the streets speaking out, vocalizing
their outrage. Perhaps we are at the beginning of change. If I was in Delhi I
certainly would have joined them. For the moment I just want to salute the
young woman for her courage in retelling her story to try to nail the
perpetrators. Let’s hope justice will be done and the culprits will face their
punishment.
